YangD is a highly scalable light weight implementation of YANG modeling and NETCONF protocol.
As per one of the telecom giant, by 2025, there will be 100 billion connections globally. Among them, 55% will come from the business world, such as smart manufacturing and smart cities. The value of connections lies in improving productivity and delivering better financial results. The other 45% of the connections will come from consumer areas such as smart homes, the Internet of Vehicles (IoV), and wearables, which will greatly improve our quality of life. The connections among 7 billion people will only account for 10% of the total. The majority of connections will be between people and things, and between things and things. Source Team QY: However, to achieve a communication between things and things there must be a common protocol, standard and a modeling laguage, which apparently be the YANG. For that matter, YangD supports the transformation of network connectivity in better way in coming days. Also, the telecom giant reiterates that, another thing we should do before 5G arrives is redefine network capabilities. Carriers need to establish software-defined architecture, achieve agile operations, and develop Big Data operation capabilities. Team QY: In SDN implementations, in opendaylight, YANG is being used as a general purpose modeling language. MD-SAL Generator and Config Generator are the two code generators that drive this. NETCONF and YANG are inseparable. NETCONF server is actually plugable, currently we have only config subsystem bridge & we might have md-sal bridge in future which will allow to access MD-SAL database using NETCONF. Source
